Golf Course Review – Porters Neck Country Club

Back in 1991, noted golf course architect Tom Fazio was given a tract of land just west of the Intracoastal Waterway in southeastern North Carolina. The goal was to build an 18-hole championship-style layout.

Fazio, who has always believed that golf courses should reflect the natural beauty of their environment, turned a relatively flat parcel of land into a course whose rolling terrain, seemed to be more suited to the Sandhills of North Carolina than the coastal plain.

Fazio’s design philosophy is simple; build a golf course that is playable for all yet offers up a challenge, so the layout does not become too mundane.

Since its inception, Porters Neck Country Club has been recognized as one of the finest private clubs throughout the state of North Carolina.

Each and every day the members here are Porters Neck Country Club enjoy not only a challenging golf course to play but one that is in superb condition throughout the entire year.

With its five sets of tees, the members of Porters Neck Country Club can choose just how much of a challenge he or they would like in their round.

For the low handicap player, the back Gold Tees play to just over 7,100 yards and feature a course rating of 74.1 and a slope of 134.

For the ladies, the forward Red Tees play to 5,145 yards and offer a course rating of 69.9 and a slope of 170.

The front side of this track seems a little less forgiving, yet there are no pushovers from the first on through the ninth.

On the back nine, this golf course at Porters Neck Country Club tightens up and requires the player to find the fairway off the tee. Failure to do so could produce some high scores on this side of the track.

All in all, the Tom Fazio-designed golf course at Porters Country Club in Wilmington, North Carolina is one of the finest private clubs you’ll find in all of southeastern part of the state.
